SCC Gerontological Nursing Competencies Partnership

Today we celebrated the launch of our partnership with Southern Cross University, UOW: University of Wollongong, Australia, UNSW and other Aged Care Service providers to to improve the skills and leadership of Nurses in the aged care sector. Pat Conaghan MP sent a wonderful speech delivered ably by Liz Newberry which stated "Having standards in competency for aged care staff – including Registered Nurses - is key to ensuring residents accessing any level of aged care will receive a quality experience.

Two local organisations have developed a strong and powerful presence in the Cowper electorate – Sawtell Catholic Care and Southern Cross University.

The Nursing Aged Care Collaborative (NACC) is filling a significant gap in the professional development needs of RNs working with older people and their family carers.

The Gerontological Nursing Competencies program also fills in the lack of recognition of the specialty of gerontological nursing.

The program has been two years in development and is now ready for release at the most fortuitous time for aged care – a Government ready to implement change off the back of a Royal Commission Report into the aged care sector, a public willing for those changes to be introduced and an industry keen to modernise and look to the future."

This is how "We Care" for our community.
